The Playlist
The Playlist
The Playlist is where the magic happens in Barre Eclipse. The moment your students walk through the door, to the transitions between each exercise, to when we close—music sets the tone. She never fails to move and motivate. We lean on her to inspire and be our guide. We recruit music as our co-instructor and co-director, helping guide our students with musical inflection. Music reveals our soul's unique flavoring—it's the seasoning that spices up our style of teaching. Our method wondrously comes alive by employing The Playlist the way we do.
We use music in ways found only with the Barre Eclipse Method.
- We create The Playlist with intention. She is something to be proud of, composed of songs we love and want to hear. The Playlist is just as crucial to the experience as our sequence. She energizes us, indeed, but more so in the way of a guide rather than background noise.
- The variations of our workouts climb through the peaks and valleys of each song. We move fast, with power, when the music intensifies. We groove slowly, mindful of the subtle, deep layers of muscles when the song indicates depth. We jam and dip hard because our music pushes us, and we simmer the count down when the music softens.
- Each workout has it's own song, a song we've committed to knowing well. This intimate knowledge of each song empowers us to teach without having to refer to notes and without having to keep time. This intimacy with music is what we mean when we say that The Playlist is our co-teacher. She cues us when to move and where to go next. We begin the workout when a song starts, and we end it when the song ends. We use the space between songs to transition to the next exercise.
- Further, as our co-teacher, we learn how to feel the music. Our voice and presence mirror the music. We teach with the music instead of imposing our voice on top of it. It is not a competition, after all. The music enhances our instruction instead of getting lost in it.
- We tap into the wide variety of genres, playing with different tempos and artists; the diversity intends to keep our students engaged. We rarely use similar style songs back-to-back, and The Playlist falls in the cadence of the energetic arc of class.
- Once we start The Playlist, we leave it until it has run its course. Again, it's because we've developed an intimacy, you see? We know our sequence, we painted our choreography with our songs; we set our Playlist and trust her to guide us throughout the entire class.
